The Dow Jones industrial average fell 57.11 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 21,410.03, with Caterpillar leading decliners and Nike outperforming.
The S&P 500 slipped 1.42 points, or 0.06 percent, to end at 2,435.61, with energy leading eight sectors lower and health care the best performer.
The Nasdaq composite advanced 45.92 points, or 0.74 percent, to close at 6,233.95.
About nine stocks declined for every five advancers at the New York Stock Exchange, with an exchange volume of 828.77 million and a composite volume of 3.572 billion at the close.
