The Oscar-winning director of the 1991 horror-thriller film The Silence of the Lambs Jonathan Demme is dead at 73.
Film site IndieWire reported Wednesday that he died of esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease.
Since his directing debut in 1971 with the film Angels Hard as They Come, Demme’s storied career included directing the 1984 Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, the 1988 Michelle Pfeiffer and Alec Baldwin comedy Married to the Mob and the groundbreaking 1993 Tom Hanks drama Philadelphia.
For one of his last projects, Demme worked with Justin Timberlake for the 2016 documentary Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids, and was in Toronto to promote the film at TIFF.
Demme is survived by his wife, director-producer Evelyn Purcell, and three children, Brooklyn, Jos and Ramona.
