An off-duty officer with the Chicago Police Department died Tuesday afternoon after he was shot multiple times in a downtown building, Fox News has learned.
“CPD officer assisting a tactical team and was shot by assailant,” the department tweeted, adding that the unidentified officer was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Multiple sources told Fox News the officer has died.
The officer, identified as a district commander, was shot in the stairwell of the Thompson Center in the city’s downtown business center, Fox 32 Chicago reported.
Witnesses and a police source told Fox News police seemed to be responding to a robbery, and the fallen officer was shot as he chased the suspect.
One person has been taken into custody for questioning, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told The Associated Press. Investigators did not say whether they considered that person a suspect.
Police were seen blocking off the building, which houses state government offices.
