Kenyan police say 27 people have been killed in a collision between a passenger bus and a tanker truckl.
The collision took place along the major road linking two of Kenya’s biggest cities, the capital of Nairobi and the port of Mombasa.
Leornard Kimaiyo, police chief in the Kambu area of Maukeni county, says the accident occurred in the Kibwezi area around midnight (5 p.m. ET Monday) as the bus driver was trying to overtake another vehicle but collided with the oncoming tanker truck, Kimaiyo told Reuters by telephone.
Kimaiyo said most of the passengers were families returning from Easter festivities and students preparing for the reopening of schools after holidays.
Another 19 people were injured. Kimaiyo said the death toll could rise.
Road accidents kill around 3,000 people in Kenya every year.
