President Donald Trump‘s attorney general, Jeff Sessions, reportedly has been questioned by the special counsel’s office in connection with its probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The New York Times, which broke the news that Sessions “was questioned for several hours last week” by special counsel Robert Mueller’s office, noted that it was the first time that a Trump cabinet member was known to have been interviewed for that investigation.

Session’s spokeswoman confirmed the interview to the Times. NBC News also has confirmed the news.

Mueller, in addition to looking Russia interference in the election that sent Trump to the White House, also is investigating whether the president has obstructed justice by interfering with inquiries into Russian actions.

Sessions last March recused himself from any inquiry into Russian interference.

The attorney general’s move came after he failed to inform Congress that he had twice met with Russia’s ambassador to the United States during the presidential campaign.
